I designed the official ASU freshman welcome t-shirt, which was distributed to over 17,000 incoming students in 2024. This shirt was worn by every single student at freshman orientation, and I continue to see it worn daily across the campus. My goal was to create a design that would appeal to ASU’s diverse student body while adhering to brand guidelines, strict project requirements, and budget constraints. Through my research, I found that students prefer simple designs but still want something that is not boring and includes unique details or elements. Additionally, since many students cut or alter their t-shirts, I ensured the design remained intact regardless of modifications. Lastly, the shirt needed to exude ASU pride—something students could wear not just at orientation, but also to sporting events and campus activities throughout their time at ASU. The reception of this shirt was a great success, making it one of the most commonly seen t-shirts on campus and at ASU sporting events and activities.
